This month the Editor has chosen Comvita UMF 5+ Manuka Honey for our regular monthly in-depth manuka honey review.
Comvita
When it comes to manuka honey, the name Comvita is rightly known as a pioneer and one of the best known brands on the market. The company’s co-founder started the company at the age of 63 and lived to be over 100! The company was also a pioneer in the production of medical grade manuka honey for use in skin care and wound care products.
Comvita’s manuka honey is also UMF certified, which is the trademark scheme run by the Unique Manuka Factor Honey Association. The UMF label means that the honey is independently tested to verify it contains certain natural chemical markers that mean it is a genuine manuka honey.
Comvita UMF 5+ Manuka Honey
The honey is a beautiful almost yellowy light brown colour and is definitely at the lighter end of the manuka honey colour spectrum. It has a thick, velvety smooth texture that is nevertheless surprisingly light when it hits the palate.
Comvita’s UMF 5+ Manuka Honey has an initial intense sweetness that tastes like banana and tropical fruit followed by the classic taste of manuka: sweet herbs mixed with toffee. It is an unusually long aftertaste that is sweet without any of the astringent flavour that is sometimes characteristic of manuka honey.
Summary
This is a fantastic manuka honey if you want to try one and find out why people like it so much but are not too worried about its potency, as a UMF level of 5+ is the lowest available. See the entire range of Comvita manuka honey here.
