Nelson Manuka Honey
Nelson Honey has recently started to change the labelling on its jars of manuka honey to reflect the level of methylglyoxal (MGO), which is the naturally occurring element in manuka honey that is responsible for its antibacterial properties.
Previously, this was the Nelson Manuka Honey Gold, but now it is labelled as Nelson Manuka Honey 200+. If you are more familiar with the UMF grading system, you can see how this level of MGO relates to the UMF rating here.
Delicious manuka honey
Nelson Manuka Honey 200+ (Gold) has a pleasant but not overpowering aroma of toffee with a hint of herbs and is an amazing golden brown colour with a hint of orange.
This manuka honey has a delightfully thick texture but is nevertheless runny – a bit like runny toffee.
The honey has a particularly impressive taste and is silky smooth and extremely well-balanced between flavours of intense flowers and herbs followed by a subtle toffee like flavour that creeps up on the palate and is accompanied by a long after taste of earthy herbs, but not in an overpowering or astringent way.
This is an excellent and delicious manuka honey. In terms of the honey’s corresponding UMF grade, while 200+ may sound high, it is in fact below UMF 10+ but the taste was fantastic and interesting so still a good choice.
