MGO is important as research into Manuka honey has established that this naturally occurring element is partially responsible for the antibacterial characteristics of the honey.
Watson & Son Manuka Honey started life as a family-run business, but now the company is owned by Ngāi Tahu, one of the most important of the Maori tribes in the southern region of New Zealand.
The limited supply of Manuka honey with this level of MGO is one reason for why it is more expensive than regular honey.
Another reason is that the Manuka bush often grows in very remote locations even if in very beautiful and scenic areas far from human activity and pollution.
