MGO 250+ Manuka Honey is a natural and delicious honey that captures the essence and taste of the natural environment in New Zealand.
The manuka tree has been known for centuries to have special properties and has long been used in traditional medicine, so perhaps it is no surprise that the honey that is produced from the nectar of the tree should equally have unusual properties.
The MGO rating system was pioneered by Manuka Health after the company discovered it was one of the key naturally occurring compounds that make manuka honey special.
MGO 250+ Manuka Honey has been tested by Manuka Health in their in-house laboratory as part of the quality assurance system that ensures the honey is genuine manuka honey and is part of the ‘hive to the shelf’ traceability ethos that also incorporates strict adherence to sustainable practices in all production processes from beekeeping to extraction.
This also means that no chemicals are used in the processing of the honey or inside the plant.
The MGO rating system for manuka honey differs from the UMF or unique manuka factor rating system in that it specifically measures the level of a compound called methylglyoxal (MGO).
This was discovered by Manuka Health and a research team in Germany to be the special compound that needs to present for a honey to be classed as genuine manuka honey.
Consumers who buy MGO 250+ Manuka Honey are guaranteed that they are buying a genuine manuka honey. The rating MGO 250+ is considered to be moderately high rating, but the range of manuka honey produced by Manuka Health has honey with a level as low as 30+ and as high as 550+.
The taste of manuka honey is unique too and it has quite a strong flavour that can have strong hints of herbs and minerals. It is also very versatile as a product and can be used as a natural sweetener in cooking or then simply eat it from the jar with a teaspoon. Infants below the age of one are not advised to consume honey.
